Are Your Solar Panels Performing as They Should?

Once your solar panels are installed, it can be easy to forget about them. But your system is working in the background every day, and monitoring its performance can help you understand how much electricity it is generating and identify problems that may need attention.

Why solar monitoring matters

Solar panels do not generate the same amount of electricity every day. Weather, season, daylight hours and household energy use all affect what you see.

That means a single low-generation day does not necessarily mean there is a fault. The useful information comes from looking at patterns over time and comparing your system's performance with what you would reasonably expect for the conditions.

What should you be able to see?

Depending on the equipment installed, your monitoring platform may give you information such as solar generation, household consumption, battery charging and discharging, and electricity being imported from or exported to the grid.

Monitoring can make it easier to spot changes. For example, a sudden drop in generation, an inverter warning or a system that appears to stop reporting may be worth investigating.

What can affect solar generation?

  • Shorter winter daylight hours

  • Cloud and poor weather

  • The position of the sun throughout the year

  • Temporary shading

  • Changes to the household's electricity demand

  • Panel soiling or physical obstructions

  • Equipment or inverter issues

When should you investigate a change in performance?

A consistent change is more useful than a single unusual reading. If generation appears to have dropped significantly compared with your normal pattern, or your monitoring system is showing an error, it is worth investigating.

If you bought a solar system several years ago, you may also benefit from checking whether your current setup is still meeting your household's needs. Your electricity use may have changed since installation — perhaps you now work from home, have an electric vehicle, have installed a heat pump or simply use more electricity than you did before.

Could your solar system be working but still not saving as much as expected?

Yes. Solar generation and household savings are related, but they are not exactly the same thing. If a household is out during most daylight hours, it may generate plenty of solar electricity but use relatively little of it at the time it is produced.

What can you do if you are unsure?

Start with your monitoring data if you have it. Look for changes rather than expecting the same output every day. If you are still unsure, a professional solar system check can provide a clearer picture of how your system is performing and whether there are any practical improvements worth considering.
