Solar Panel Monitoring: How to Tell If Your System Is Performing Properly
- May 17
- 2 min read
Solar is one of those upgrades that should quietly save you money in the background—but only if it’s working properly.
Monitoring helps you:
· Confirm your system is generating as expected
· Spot drops in performance early
· Understand how your household uses electricity
This is exactly why we include a free upgraded monitoring app with our solar installs.
What you should be checking (simple, homeowner-friendly)
1) Daily generation patterns
Generation changes with seasons, but you should still see a predictable pattern on sunny days.
2) Sudden drops
If your system suddenly generates far less than usual (with similar weather), it could indicate:
· A fault
· A tripped breaker
· An inverter issue
· A connection problem
3) Export vs self-use
Your app can help you understand how much you’re using in the home vs exporting to the grid.
If you’re exporting a lot, you might benefit from:
· Shifting usage to daytime (washing machine, dishwasher)
· Considering battery storage (if it fits your goals)
Common reasons systems underperform
· Shading (new trees, scaffolding, seasonal changes)
· Dirty panels (rarely a major issue, but it can contribute)
· Inverter faults
· Electrical issues
When to ask for help
If you notice:
· Zero generation on a bright day
· Big, unexplained drops
· Frequent error messages
Get it checked sooner rather than later.
Next step
If you’re planning solar and want visibility and control from day one, ask about our monitoring upgrade and dedicated mains board setup.
